Birthday 'tea'

Today we celebrated Eliana's birthday. Eliana brought in some special treats shaped like tea cups for us all to share. We had a lot of fun pretending to drink our 'tea' and even more fun eating it!
Some of our girls spent their whole lunch time practising a dance for Eliana by spelling her name. It was a happy day.
1/2DW are so thoughtful!

Sink or Float?

Today 1/2DW did another Science experiment! We had to guess what would sink or float and then test it out!

It was so much fun and there was lots of conversation around the water trays about things that sink or float and why.

Listen to Reading Tumblebooks

As part of Daily 5 we have been 'Listening to Reading'. This helps us to see what a fluent and expressive reader sounds like and it helps our vocabulary.

There is a great website called 'Tumblebooks' and we love listening to the stories.

http://www.library.camden.nsw.gov.au/Childrens/childrensResources.aspx

You need to click on Online Resources and then Tumblebooks will be at the bottom of the page.
This is a video of us with our new favourite book.

In 'Listen to Reading' we just listen, not talk, but we have been listening to this book at other times too.

Week 6 award winners

Last Friday our morning assembly was cancelled due to rain. We still wanted to celebrate and acknowledge three people from our class that worked hard to earn an award last week.

Congratulations to:

Lachlan for great work in mathematics using bundles of ten.
Katarina for being a kind and caring friend.
Nathanael for sharing amazing information about Chinese New Year in our HSIE studies of celebrations.

We are all proud if you all!

Commutative Property

Looking at Commutative Property in Addition sounds really hard, but it's not! It just means that when we add it doesn't matter which number we put first, the sum will be the same.
So 3+4=7 and 4+3=7
Here's what we thought about the lesson today.
Kaitlyn: If you swap the numbers around when adding, you still get the same number.
Charlotte: 2+1 =3 and 1+2 still equals 3.

Our Seeds Have Grown

On Monday morning we walked in to the classroom and the students were so excited! Our seeds have grown! Some of them have grown really tall.

Unfortunately the ones without water haven't grown at all!

Water helps things to grow and plants definitely need water.

Discussions

Today we started a new text type. We'll be looking at Discussions for the next few weeks. Here are two Discussions we wrote as a class.

Should kids do jobs at home?

Our class had a discussion on whether or not children should do chores at home.

Kids could earn money by doing chores and they could buy things without asking their parents for money.
Helping out at home could impress their parents.
Kids could get money for doing jobs and they could buy more toys.

Kids could get frustrated by doing chores and lose their temper.
If children are too close to the ground they could get dust in their lungs.
They could miss out on their favourite shows if they were doing jobs.

Most of the class decided that kids should do chores to help their parents.

Should school change to 12:00pm-6:00pm?
Our class had a discussion on whether or not school should change to 12:00pm-6:00pm

School should change from 12:00pm-6:00pm because kids could have more time at home to help around the house in the morning.
Kids could catch up with their friends in the morning.
Students would be able to concentrate more in class.

School should not change 12:00pm-6:00pm because kids would get home too late and they wouldn’t get enough sleep.
Kids wouldn’t have enough time after school for special activities like Scouts or Sport.
Families would not have enough time together at night if school went until 6pm because they would only have time for dinner and bed.
Most of us decided that school should stay with the same hours.

Monday 12th November

Today Zack got to tell news about his baby sister Harmony. She's the cutest news we've had this year!

We used the tens frames and counters to add numbers. Some people did some really hard sums!

Grandparents Day

Yesterday the Junior School celebrated grandparents day. Our grandparents came to a special assembly followed by a picnic lunch. They were then invited into our classroom to join in some literacy activities with us. We performed a song, read a story about a very cranky bear and then did some word work and craft activities. We also taught our grandparents how to do 'read to someone' and how to use iPads to record ourselves reading. Some mums, dads, siblings and even aunts and uncles came too. It was a great afternoon involving our families. We finished our day by giving our grandparents a card we has made and a cupcake we decorated earlier that day just for them.
Thank you to all our grandparents and families who came along yesterday. We hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did!
Here are some photos of us decorating the cupcakes.
