Kaitlyn received the award in Church Time for her attitude towards others and her schoolwork. Well done!

Our Seeds Are Growing!

1/2DW have some exciting news! Our seeds have sprouted already! We have been learning that plants need sun too. We put some foil in out the back of the classroom and covered some grass to see what will happen to the grass without any sun.

Art around the world - China!

Today 1/2DW 'travelled' to China and learned about some of the celebrations held during Chinese New Year. We watched a You Tube clip of a lion dance and talked about the costumes the dancers wore. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SBOUs8M2Uw&feature=related
The Chinese Lion Dance goes back some one thousand years. The lions express joy and happiness. From the fourth day to the fifteenth of the New Year, lion dance groups would tour from village to village in traditional China.
We then made our own lion puppets. First we made the body by folding two strips of paper to make a concertina. It was a little bit tricky but some of us got the hang of it and were able to help our peers so everyone could finish. Mrs Wadds was very proud of us helping each other. We then used tissue paper, crepe paper and cotton balls to make our lion's face and tail and then glued them to either end of the concertina.
At the end of the activity we all got a stamp in our passports for visiting China and used the spinner to find out where we are going next week.

These masterpieces belong to Emily A, Harrison and Kaitlyn.

Next week we are going back to Australia to do Aboriginal dot paintings.

Word Work

Daily 5 Word work can be so fun! Today we are spelling some words using magazines, shaving cream, watercolour paint, whiteboards and play dough. Gone are the days of spelling lessons with just paper and pencils!
