This week 1/2DW are having a look at money! Unfortunately the kids have been a little disappointed as it is fake money that they've been playing with, but it does look quite real!
We have been using ziplock bags as pretend wallets and finding a range of ways to make the same amount of money.
Harrison bought in his dad's collection of old coins and notes today. We loved looking at it and Mrs Downes remembered when she was younger and they had 1c, 2c coins and $1, $2 notes.
How many ways can you make $3 with a variety of coins?
We are a Stage One class at Mount Annan Christian College. We are continually learning; the students and the teachers!

Plants need Water!
Today we started an experiment!
We went outside and poured water into soil to see what would happen.
The water disappeared very quickly!
We then discussed how plants need water to grow. Over the next two weeks we are going to grow a seed using water and one without water.
We're doing this experiment in pairs and each pair will be responsible for two cups with a seed in each.
One of the cups will need to be watered and one won't.
I wonder what will happen?

Problem solving
Last week 1/2DW learnt a new strategy for problem solving in mathematics. It is called 'Act it out'. When you read a problem, you can act it out using people, blocks, counters, books, pencils or anything else you can find. We first solved the problem of Jamie the cook making 5 cakes and putting 6 smarties on each cake. We chose 5 people to stand up and gave each person 6 counters. We then saw that Jamie used 30 counters altogether.
After solving a few problems together, we had a go at solving more problems on our own or with a partner.
1/2DW are very clever problem solvers!
